Computer repairs and compatible upgrades, explained clearly by John Dela Guardia.
A slow computer or a worn-out part does not always mean you need a new device. CyberGuardia provides scheduled in-home PC and laptop hardware assessment in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, Rockville, Silver Spring and nearby Northwest DC. John discusses whether a repair or upgrade makes sense before you commit.
Repairs and Upgrades We Can Assess
- Memory (RAM): replace faulty memory or add compatible capacity.
- Hard drives and SSDs: replace storage or upgrade to a compatible solid-state drive.
- Batteries: replace supported laptop batteries and CMOS/RTC batteries that help retain clock and firmware settings.
- Graphics cards: replace or upgrade compatible desktop GPUs after checking power and space requirements.
- Power and cooling: assess desktop power supplies, fans and CPU coolers; discuss internal cleaning and overheating concerns.
- Other components: ask about supported Wi-Fi adapters, laptop keyboards and screens. Availability depends on the exact model and access to compatible parts.
Some components are soldered or difficult to access. Board-level soldering, liquid-damage restoration and specialist recovery are not included in a routine visit; we discuss an appropriate next step where needed. Printer support covers setup and troubleshooting; this offering does not promise mechanical printer repairs.
Mac Support and Older-Model Upgrades
John can help with Mac setup, macOS troubleshooting, supported updates, backups, migration and printer connections. For compatible older Mac models, ask about replacing or upgrading removable RAM, hard drives or SSDs, and supported batteries.
We check the exact model and year before recommending parts or agreeing to a repair. Many newer Macs have memory or storage that cannot be replaced or upgraded independently. Mac fan and screen repairs are not part of the advertised service. Parts availability, device condition and compatibility determine what can be offered.
The same agreed in-home labor rate applies: $145 per hour, one-hour minimum, then 15-minute increments, plus approved parts. Complex work is quoted separately. Data transfer or recovery is included only when separately agreed.
Clear Pricing Before Work Begins
$145 per in-home hour, plus parts. One-hour minimum, followed by 15-minute increments. Diagnosis and installation time count toward the visit, including when replacement or repair is not worthwhile. We agree on the assessment scope and charges first. Any travel fee is confirmed before booking.
Complex disassembly or a larger repair receives a separate written estimate. File transfer, drive cloning, Windows installation and data recovery are separately scoped and priced; replacing a drive does not automatically include these tasks. Existing member and prepaid-plan terms remain unchanged; eligibility is confirmed before booking.
How a Repair Visit Works
- Tell us what is happening. Include the computer make and model if available. Do not send passwords or private files in the form.
- Review the options. We discuss compatibility, likely labor, parts costs, backup arrangements and whether the repair is sensible.
- Approve the work. Parts purchases and changes outside the agreed scope require approval. Timing depends on assessment and parts availability.
- Check the result together. John tests the agreed work, explains what changed and discusses any next steps at your pace.
Your Files, Parts and Follow-Up
We discuss a suitable backup before changes that could affect your data. Backup work is included only when agreed. You remain in control of account access and enter your own passwords whenever practical. Data recovery and a successful repair cannot be guaranteed.
Before ordering, we confirm who buys the parts, any deposit, and applicable return or manufacturer-warranty arrangements. Customer-supplied parts are checked for suitability before installation. The existing seven-day correction policy applies to errors in agreed work; a faulty part and an installation error are reviewed separately. Your statutory rights remain unchanged.
Replaced parts are returned unless you agree to another arrangement, including a required supplier return. Storage drives are not erased, destroyed or recycled without your explicit authorization. If a device must leave your home, we agree on its recorded condition, accessories, handling and return arrangements first. Visits are by appointment; there is no walk-in storefront.
